Overview

This project focused on creating a Mother Mary statue as a large-scale installation in South Africa. The intention was to design something that feels grounded in its surroundings while maintaining the spiritual and symbolic presence associated with the subject. The use of natural and raw materials like stone, wood, dried grass, water, cement, and grass was central to how the structure connects with the environment.

Challenge

The main challenge was balancing spirituality with material expression. The client needed a structure that feels respectful and meaningful, without making it overly polished or artificial. Since the materials are varied—ranging from hard elements like stone and cement to organic ones like grass and wood—the difficulty was ensuring everything works together as one cohesive form.

Another challenge was durability and context. The installation had to withstand outdoor conditions while still maintaining its visual and symbolic clarity. It also needed to feel like part of the landscape, not something placed on top of it.

Solution

The approach focused on integrating materials in a way that feels natural rather than forced. Stone and cement provide structural stability, while wood, grass, and dried elements help soften the overall look and connect it to the surroundings. Water elements add depth and a sense of calm, supporting the spiritual tone of the installation.

The final composition balances strength and subtlety, allowing the statue to stand out as a focal point while still blending into its environment. This helps the client present a structure that feels both meaningful and contextually appropriate.
